On the morning of October 23, Tongji University 2020 Senior Citizens’ Day Conference and 70th birthday celebration of retired faculty and staff was held in the Xujiahui Community Cultural Activity Center with the theme of “Dreaming of a Well-Off Year in Old Age.” Tongji’s Deputy Secretary WU Gungming attended the conference and delivered his speech. Present at the conference were: the retired senior leaders, representatives of the China Cares for the Next Generation Working Committee, the Association of Senior Professors of Tongji University, the China Association for Science and Technology, retired Party Branch Secretaries, representatives of the elderly Arts Troupe, and more than 100 retired faculty and staff members above the age of 70.

Speech by WU Guangming

On behalf of Tongji’s Party and Administration leaders and all teachers, students, and staff members, WU Guangming extended heartfelt greetings to all senior comrades and sent birthday greetings to those who reached the age of 70. He said the retired comrades of Tongji University donated money and materials during the national fight against the COVID-19. Actively, they signed up as pandemic prevention volunteers and psychological counseling services in the community. Those senior comrades took the overall situation into account and cooperated with Shanghai and Tongji’s various anti-pandemic prevention measures, making their due contributions to the phased victory in the fight against the COVID-19. WU said the retired comrades were valuable assets of Tongji University. He hoped that everyone would exert all their strength to be the “think tank” of Tongji; spare no efforts to be the bridge between Tongji and the retired teaching faculty and staff; and devote loyal and unselfish service to be a good supervisor of Tongji’s retirement work. In conclusion, he wished sincerely the senior comrades a happy Double-Nine Festival, good health, and a happy life!

Launching Ceremony of WeChat Official Account: Office for Retirees of Tongji University

Later, WU Guangming, WANG Jianyun, and ZHU Guangjie, two senior leaders who retired from the Bureau of Services for Retirees, and CAI Maosen, a representative of the retired faculty and staff above the age of 70, launched the WeChat Official Account jointly under the name: Office for Retirees of Tongji University.

Happy Birthday Chorus

A Happy Birthday chorus kicked off the Senior Citizens’ Day concert. The concert, performed by the Shanghai Public Orchestra, featured well-known red songs such as Red Detachment of Women and Ode to Heroes, and new era music such as Building a New Era Together and China Power. The performance ended successfully with the melodious singing of Red Sunset
