At the end of September, the official website of OTC (Offshore Technology Conference) announced officially that Tongji School of Ocean and Earth Science Professor and Former Chief Geologist of China National Offshore Oil Corporation ZHU Weilin was awarded the Special Contribution Award. This award is one of the most important awards in the global petroleum industry, and Professor ZHU Weilin is also the first Chinese scientist to receive this honor.

The Award Introduction of Professor ZHU
The OTC Committee pointed out in the award speech that Professor ZHU Weilin has made outstanding and creative achievements in China’s offshore oil industry for a long time, and he has made preeminent contributions in many aspects such as the research and development, operations, and management of the offshore oil industry. The award speech also stated that Professor ZHU, one of the leading figures in China’s offshore oil industry, has contributed remarkably to this industry with his vision and leadership in the exploration and development fields as well as his extraordinary understanding in the field of regional and petroleum geology.
ZHU used to be Chief Geologist of China’s National Offshore Oil Corporation, is currently a distinguished professor at Tongji University, and Director of Tongji’s Marine Resources Research Center. He also serves as the Expert Group Leader for Medium and Long-term Planning of National Offshore Oil and Gas Development Subfield, member of the Expert Group for Major Research Program of National Natural Science "The Evolution of the South China Sea Deep Sea Process,” and Deputy Director of China’s Ocean Drilling Expert Committee. He has won four second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award (two of which ranked first), and took a total of six special and first prizes of the Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Progress Award.
Professor ZHU has been engaged in the research of oil and gas geology of sedimentary basins and the management of marine oil and gas exploration in the China Seas for nearly 40 years. He is the academic leader of the petroleum geology research of China’s marine basins and the principal of the offshore oil and gas exploration during the "11th Five-Year Plan" to the "12th Five-Year Plan" period. He has led his team to devote themselves to decades of study and research. Based on the systematic palaeolimnological study of continental Cenozoic basins under rare and special geological conditions in the China Seas, ZHU’s team has made substantial breakthroughs in the differential enrichment theory of oil and gas in the Bohai active fault zone and deep-water oil and gas accumulation theory in the northern South China Seas. A series of major oil and gas discoveries have been made one after another in the offshore-deep water basins of China, where a large number of internationally renowned oil companies have withdrawn their operations after failed explorations. These discoveries guided offshore oil and gas explorations to achieve historic breakthroughs and making outstanding contributions to the rapid and efficient development of China’s offshore oil.
