On September 9, the result of the Annual Election of the Good Teacher of Shanghai (model of imparting knowledge and educating people) was announced. Ten teachers received this honorable title and the professor of the College of Civil Engineering of our University and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, LV Xilin, was among the list of awardees.
After receiving his doctorate degree in Structural Engineering at Tongji University in 1984, LV Xilin chose to remain at his alma mater as a teacher. Over the past 36 years, he has devoted himself to the teaching and research ofstructure design of anti-earthquake buildings, and engaged in teaching and conducting scientific researchconscientiously.
His demeanor of meticulous scholarship, noble teaching ethics, assiduous study, moral education, and talent cultivation set a good example for teachers and students. He was awarded the National Outstanding Teacher in 1993 and 2014, and won the National Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth Award. He has presided over more than 60 research projects, as well as supervising major engineering research studies at national, provincial, and ministerial levels. He edited five technical standards publications and participated in the compilation of nine books. He earned threeSecond Place National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology awards, 16 provincial- and ministerial-level Science and Technology awards, and has published more than 400 scientific papers. In 2015, LVreceived the HO LUENG HO LEE Science and Technology Progress award, and he received the prestigious Nathan M. Newmark Medal of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2017. In 2008, he was rated as the advanced individual for earthquake relief by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and China Association for Science and Technology.
To date, academician LVXilin has cultivated 85 doctoral and 100 master degree recipients. Some of his PhD students have been teaching at Tongji University since their graduation. One of them received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholarsaward (in progress), another has earned the title of:Young and Middle-aged Science and Technology Innovation Leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology, two others received the National Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth award, and still two others were awarded the Shanghai Youth Science and Technology Star.
