The main structure of the National Seabed Scientific Observation Network Monitoring and Data Center gets roofed

September 10, 2020

On August 31, good news came during the final phase of construction of the National Seabed Scientific Observation Network Monitoring and Data (NSSONMDC) facility, a major national scientific and technological infrastructure led by Tongji University. With the final concrete pouring completed, the main structure of the facility was roofed successfully.

The NSSOCMDC is the only major national scientific and technological infrastructure currently under construction in China's marine field, mainly including the subnet of East China Sea seabed observation, the monitoring and data center, and supporting projects. Once completed, it will become a first-class comprehensive seabed scientific observation network at home and abroad, establishing an open and shared major scientific platform for China's marine science research, serving the comprehensive needs of marine environment monitoring, resource development, and disaster warning.

The monitoring and data center, built at No.303, Haiyang 7th Road, Lingang New Area, China (Shanghai) Pilot Free-Trade Zone, carries the functions of monitoring, data storage, and management of the entire seabed scientific observation system. The total construction area is 11,766 square meters, with four floors above the ground and a building height of 18 meters. The main structure adopts the reinforced concrete frame structure with a monomer prefabrication rate of 25.56%. The exterior walls adopt precast fair-faced concrete slabs.

With the strong support of the state and Shanghai, especially the Shanghai Technology Innovation Center, the facility construction adopts an innovated system - Formulate One Plan, Start One Project, which means the construction work will start accordingly once the plan becomes mature. Following this principle, the monitoring and data center construction project was the first to start on June 28, 2019. This year, confronting the challenge of COVID-19 outbreak, the project office urged and supervised the main project contractor to implement strict pandemic prevention regulations, adjust the construction work timeline, and race against time to complete the node project. With concerted efforts, the main structure of the monitoring and data center was roofed successfully, ensuring the steady and efficient completion of the project. The construction project of the monitoring and data center is expected to participate in the city’s high-quality structure evaluation in September this year, and will finally be completed in the first quarter of next year.
