On September 8, the Celebration of Teacher's Day 2020 was held in the I-29 Auditorium of Tongji University. Nearly 300 representatives of the Universities, including FANG Shouen, CHEN Jie, WU Jiang, JIANG Changjun, XU Jianping, LV Peiming, WU Guangming, GU Xianglin, FANG Ping, FENG Shenhong, LEI Xinghui, CHEN Yihan, representatives of teachers who are awarded important honorary titles of Shanghai and Tongji Universities for 2020, teachers with 30 years of teaching experience, retired, newly-recruited, and front-line teachers, primary representatives of functional departments and faculties, and student representatives attended the conference. At the same time, each faculty member participated in various online sessions. Executive Vice President Wu Jiang presided over the meeting which began with a speech given by the Secretary of the Party Committee FANG Shouen.

On behalf of the school, FANG Shouen sent sincere greetings and high respects to all school's teachers and staff who had worked hard and dedicated themselves to education and teaching, expressed warm congratulations to the outstanding teachers who had been awarded, expressed his heartfelt thanks to the veteran and retired teachers who had taught for 30 years, and welcomed the new teachers who had recently joined Tongji University. FANG pointed out from the 18th CPC National Congress that General Secretary Xi Jinping has explained profoundly the extreme importance of education and the teaching occupation from the overall situation of national prosperity, national rejuvenation, and education development, and stated clearly the criteria of a qualified teacher, including the "four characters a teacher needs, being a guide from four aspects, and four unity of moral characters." These criteria arerequirements for teachers to be qualified, in terms of their ideology, morality, knowledge, ability, style, and discipline. Serving as guidance for strengthening the construction of the teaching force and cultivating high-quality, professional, and innovative teachers in the new era, these criteria have given teachers a sacred responsibility and mission.

FANG pointed out that, since the COVID-19 outbreak this year, all faculty members and staff have taken concrete actions to practice the spirit of "working together in the same boat," and many touching stories have emerged from coordinating the work of pandemic prevention and control at the Universities. Teachers took the responsibility of teaching online and supervising them offline, making sure that no student would fall behind. Experts and professors shouldered the task bravely of organizing scientific research in vaccine, stem cell-assisted therapy, and broad-spectrum anti-virus spray developments to help prevent and fight pandemics. Medical staff of the affiliated hospitals carried forward the spirit of "adversary" and rushed to the key areas, bringing Tongji's flag to the front line. In these crucial days, many party cadres in the school did their best to guard the "responsibility field," protect the "whole school," and insisted on the principles of "five plus two," "white plus black," and so on. All these stories reflect fully the responsibility of Tongji teachers and infuse the spirit of Tongji with the new connotation of the era.

On behalf of the school, FANG had three hopes for the teachers: first, we must be firm in our ideals and convictions and take a clear-cut stand in our direction; second, we must keep improving our quality and capacity of teaching and third, we must carry forward the spirit of Tongji and nurture our national sentiments. He also stressed that we should continue to implement the relevant requirements of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on deepening the reform of the construction of the teaching force comprehensively in the new era, strengthen the reform and innovation of teacher management, improve the talent mechanism and stimulate teachers’ motivation so the majority of teachers will be more willing to devote themselves to education. He asked the functional, faculty administrative, and logistics service departments to improve their work style, serve teachers well, constantly optimize teachers' learning, working, and living conditions, and improve the sense of well-being of the majority of teachers.

At the meeting, the school's leaders awarded Shanghai's 2020 Qualified Teachers with Four Important Characters and Shanghai's Good Doctors title winners, as well as Tongji University's Award for Pursuit of Excellent Education, Excellent Service, and the nomination award of Pursuit of Excellence Service, Outstanding Teacher and nomination award winners. This year, the school also set up a special award and nomination prize for Excellent Teachers (in pandemic prevention and control). A total of 48 teachers received these awards. The General Assembly also held a ceremonial certificate awarding ceremony for teachers who had taught for 30 years and those who had retired with honors. Certificates and souvenirs were given to 157 teachers for their 30 years of teaching and to 186 teachers for their honorably service as retired teachers.

At the meeting, LI Qiang from the Affiliated Oriental Hospital, XU Qianwei from the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and LIU Ying from the School of Law spoke on behalf of the award-winning, retired, and newly employed teachers, respectively, expressing their commitment as teachers and doctors, sharing their experience in teaching and educating people for many years, and expressed their determination to be qualified teachers.

It is reported that Tongji University has launched a "real and effective" initiatives in recent years. Thanks to a mix of reform efforts that include political training for teachers, personnel reform within the talent system, and training for young teachers, remarkable results can be seen in the construction of a high-quality innovative educational team. A number of teachers in the school have been awarded various honors and recognition, both nationwide and in Shanghai. Academician ZHENG Shiling has been named: Shanghai Model Teacher, Shanghai Education Scholar, and National Beautiful Teacher. Academician CHANG Qing, and Mr. LI Yan, a teacher of the Second Affiliated Middle School, were awarded National Outstanding Teacher. Mr. LI Rui was awarded Most Beautiful College Counselor, and Mr. LI Guoqiang's team, was selected as the first batch of National College Huang Danian-style Teacher Teams. The research team of aerospace surveying and mapping was awarded the honorary title of: Advanced Collective of National Education System. Academician LV Xilin was awarded Shanghai Four Good Teachers (Model Teacher and Educator), WU Xianzheng, GAO Liang and ZHOU Caicun were awarded the honorary title of: Qualified Teachers with Four Important Characters (Education Scholar). WU Xianzheng, GAO Liang and ZHOU Caicun were awarded the honorary title of Shanghai Good Doctors.
