On the morning of September 8, the opening ceremony for the 2020 freshmen of Tongji University was held at the 129 Sports Ground of the Siping Road campus and the Playground of the Jiading campus through a live broadcast. Leaders of Tongji University FANG Shouen, CHEN Jie, WU Jiang, JIANG Changjun, XU Jianping, LV Peiming, WU Guangming, GU Xianglin, FANG Ping, FENG Shenhong, LEI Xinghui, CHEN Yihan, and LIU Yongzhang, Former Deputy Party Secretary of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and the liaison person responsible for the work of Party building of universities directly under the Ministry of Education attended the ceremony. President CHEN Jie delivered his speech with Tongji University’s Executive Vice President WU Jiang presiding over the ceremony. All freshmen attended the opening ceremony.

At 8 o'clock in the morning, the ceremony opened with the majestic national anthem. In the speech titled: Perseverance, efforts, responsibility, dedication make up the colorful youth, President CHEN Jie expressed his warmest welcome to the students on behalf of the University. He said the students had gone through an extraordinary period this year, withstood the dual tests of the pandemic and pursuing further education, worked hard in chasing their dreams, and performed well in their stage of youth. The students are the most beautiful scenery, the freshest blood, the most earnest expectation, and the most vigorous force of Tongji University.
President CHEN on The Speech
While looking back on history, the President pointed out that Tongji University has always fulfilled its commitment to the country and society for the past 113 years. As time goes on, the baton of accelerating the construction of a world-class university with Chinese characteristics has been passed on to the students. “From today forward, I hope that you can deeply understand the school motto: Working together in the same boat in your future study and life -- We are one for one goal”! He said that freshmen should have lofty ideals and be persevering, be knowledgeable and dare to act, be responsible, and be passionate and dedicated. “I hope that you will cherish your youth, be ready to pursue your dreams, persevere in your faith, learn solid skills, and be courageous in dedication and grow into the pillars of society and professional elites who lead the future; the backbone who can take the responsibility of national rejuvenation while writing a chapter of colorful youth that is worthy of the times”.
WU Jiang announced the list of the winners of Scholarship for Undergraduate Freshmen of 2020 of Tongji University. One student received the Scholarship for Excellent Undergraduate Freshmen of 2020, and 177 students received the Scholarship for Undergraduate Freshmen of 2020.
Professor ZHOU Huaiyang from the School of Ocean and Earth Science delivered his speech on behalf of Tongji teachers. He shared his life’s insights with students, and encouraged them to cherish this precious college life, dream big, always keep curious and enthusiastic for pursuing scientific truths, study hard, think more and ask more, and enhance their ability to constantly innovate to create a wonderful youth in themselves.
YANG Jianhua, who majored in Structural Engineering, graduated from the College of Civil Engineering at Tongji University with his Master’s degree, and is now Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and General Manager of Central-South Architectural Design Institute Co., Ltd. (CSADI), delivered her speech as the representative of Tongji University alumni. She shared her unforgettable time at Tongji University from the six aspects of: studying at Tongji, being respectful at Tongji, love for Tongji, being healthy at Tongji, being happy at Tongji, and eating at Tongji, and her experience of leading the team as the commander-in-chief of the Leishenshan Hospital project design and how they made full use of every minute after the pandemic broke out. She hoped the students could always keep in mind the ambition of serving the country, inheriting the spirit of Tongji University, and growing as pillars of the country.
Chairman of the Student Union at Tongji University JIANG Dongyu (also an undergraduate of 2017 from the College of Transportation Engineering) gave his speech as representative of the senior students. He said as young students in the new era, we must actively respond to the call of the country, not to follow others blindly, not to go after fame and money, dare to take responsibilities and innovate, and strive to break through technical bottlenecks, and work hard to grow into indomitable, social backbones.
YANG Cheng, winner of the Scholarship for Excellent Undergraduate Freshmen of 2020 and also a freshman of the Jimei School of Freshmen College, LU Binyu, a 2020 graduate from the College of Electronics and Information Engineering delivered speeches as representatives of the University Freshmen. Also giving a speech was Amindo, a 2020 international undergraduate student from the School of Medicine, as the representative of International Freshmen. Altogether, they expressed their determination and confidence to start a new journey of life at Tongji University.
A ceremony of wearing the school badge was also held during the opening ceremony. In the background music of the Song of Tongji, several freshmen representatives came to the podium and school leaders, to include FANG Shouen and CHEN Jie, placed school badges on them. The students in the audience also wore the school badge already displayed on their clothing. Finally, the opening ceremony ended with everyone singing: Ode to the Motherland.
