During this summer holiday guided by the idea that “cities are built by people and built for people”, a summer practice team Wild Game Terminators from Tongji University’s College of Design and Innovationhas driven the reorganization of food markets with their innovative design projects in a couple of communities. Consisted of HU Ke’er, TIAN Qinfeng, QIAN Yilin and WANG Xinyi, this team tried to strengthen people’s understanding of food safety and healthy diet, and brought innovative solutions for community governance.
The team designed a series of graphic advertisement materials with the theme: “Building a Food Market with No Wild Game,” and decorated the Meicheng Food Market on Anshan Zhi Lu Road, Siping Street, and Yangpu Food Market on Kongjiang Street. The materials, including primary and secondary posters, hanging flags, and other publicity materials with varying hierarchy and quantities of information posted in targeted areas of the food markets. All displayed the theme perfectly, while attracting many shopkeepers and residents.
In addition, the team had designed and printed badges and leaflets for the shopkeepers. Some shopkeepers wore the badges on their chests and some signed agreements with the team. Some were asked by the residents about food safety, and the shopkeepers volunteered to be representatives of market civilization.
In order to implement their idea further and popularize science knowledge, the team has cooperated with local organizations in Kongjiang Fourth Community in Yangpu District to host a cultural activity with the theme: Sing the praises of civilized communities and build health markets. Residents enjoyed and played traditional music in the community entertainment room. The team combined popular science lectures with games, perfectly expressed their wish to build a safer community, and called on people to say “No” to wild game. They recomposed and performed a song with the theme: Building a Food Market with No Wild Game: “Building a food market with no wild food, and safeguarding residents’ health” Their performance received rounds of applause from residents. In addition, the team also designed and compiled a set of popular science books called "The Big Book of Poison Detection," which explains the harm of eating wild game and the necessity and methods of hygienic consumption from a multi-dimensional perspective. The book was distributed as a gift to residents who attended the events.
With the help of Xinhui Neighborhood Committee of Kongjiang Street, Yangpu District, the team joined hands with residents and shopkeepers to carry out a variety of volunteer services and practical activities in the food market. In order to make the activity more interesting, the team held offline activities under the theme of "Lucky draw," and carried out publicity and science popularization among residents by means of small quizzes and other exciting methods. The team also created a public online account named “Ying Hong Fu” and published several popular science popular articles on this platform. At the same time, the H5 game was created to allow residents to participate in the construction of a "civilized community" online and offline in a multi-dimensional way.
To deepen the concept of “Building a Civilized Market” and provide better service and environments for residents, the students joined the residents and shopkeepers to clean the food market. By doing so, they hoped the idea that “cities are built by and for people” could be implemented better through practice and people would see cleaner and healthier food market in the days to go.
The practice team said they would stay committed to vitalizing the community autonomy and building sanitized, civilized communities, and carry out more practical activities. Starting with the communities around the school, they hope to expand to more communities gradually, from Siping Road, Shanghai, to Guangdong and other areas where wild game is popular. They also hope that more food markets would say “No” to wild game, and communities will become much cleaner. All these improvements will grow like green seedlings throughout the country, making due contributions to the construction of a healthy China.
