On August 5, the Shanghai Municipal Education and Health Work Party Committee and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commissionreleased a list of ten Shanghai College Students of2019, among which was MA Mingjie, a PhDstudent fromtheCollege of Transportation Engineering, Tongji University.
MAis called affectionately the "pandemic prevention vanguard" by his villagersin his hometown of Zhongshuizhai Village, Jiayingguan Township, Wuzhi County, Henan Province.
MAMingjietook the lead in the prevention and control of the pandemicamong all college studentsin his village. Through his own initiative, students from other universities joined forces to fight the pandemic. All ten members of this anti-pandemic team, which was composed of undergraduate and graduate students, were active in the pandemic detection checkpoints, farming fields, and homes of impoverished households. They helped prevent and control the pandemic, and helped the resumption of production and poverty alleviation measures.
Following the outbreak of the pandemic, Zhongshuizhai Village took immediate action by taking measures such as setting up checkpoints, checking body temperatures, and sterilizingpublic places regularly. MAMingjie is a Communist Party member and a "long-standing member" of the village assistance team. In the face of the menacing pandemic, he toldhimself, "You are a Party member, and you must be at the forefront." He took the initiative to sign up for duty work at the Village entrance, registering all entering and exiting residents, measuring body temperatures, and disinfecting them strictly every day. He also organized a volunteer team for the returneduniversity students. On February 1, he established a temporary Party branch team composed of university studentsfromZhongshuizhai Village for pandemic prevention and control. MAwas responsible for the arrangement of dutiesforthe student Party members. Together withthe other members, he also set up a volunteer assistance team for the university students in Zhongshui Village, and he took the initiative to undertake the pandemic prevention and control policy promotion work in the Village.
After the Village enterprises resumed their work and production, how the villagers’ children couldstudy at home became the parents’ biggest concern. The university students took an action quickly. Based upontheir researchresult, MA’s teamhelped the primary and middle school students in the Villagewith a range of lessons and provided psychological assistance to them as well.Theytook advantage of their academic strengths in their helpwith the junior students. Their tutoring coverednot only core courses like Chinese, math, and physics from the elementary to high school levels, but also such coursesas ComputerTechnology, Photography, and Psychology. Withhis team’s efforts, some children have improved their academic performance, and others have become more cheerful. The gratefulvillagers spoke very high ofthe team members for their greatefforts.
When the pandemic eased, MA’s team helped the villagers resume their work and production under the guidance of the village leaders. They offered assistancein preparationforplowing, irrigating the farmland,planting fruit trees in fig plant bases, and encouraging and guiding villagers to resume production. They also helped villagers do properly in self-protection, consolidate the results of poverty alleviation measures, and ensure that poverty alleviation tasks were completed fully and on schedule.
The work of the teamled by MAMingjie, who demonstrated the power of youth on the front line of fighting thepandemic in their hometown,was well received by all. CHENBaosheng,Minister of the Ministry of Education,praised MA and his other members for their outstanding deeds in fighting the pandemic and helping with poverty alleviation actively. The Jiayingguan Township Party Committee and the Government recognized MAMingjie and his other members as"pandemic prevention vanguards." Both the UniversityWorking Committee ofHenan Province and the Department of Education ofHenan Province awarded them the honor of "Outstanding College Student Group for COVID-19Prevention and Control," and decided to organize activities to learn from MA’s outstanding team in the education field, HenanProvince.

At this special time, we must take the initiative to stand up and grow together with ourmotherland," said MA.He continued by saying,“Duringthis extraordinary period when we can't return to our university, we will continue our efforts to bring light and heat to this land of our hometown, and use the strength asuniversity students in this new era to help overcome poverty and rebuild our beautiful villages.”
