The results of Tongji University's Teaching Achievements Awards 2019 were announced last week. A total of 194 achievements were awarded, including 20 special prizes, 43 first, 60 second and 71 third prizes.

Application for the university achievement awards was initiated at the end of last year. A total of 238 applications from 37 schools and departments were received, an increase of 45% compared with that of last session. The applications were reviewed by both internal and external experts through correspondence and meetings. First prize candidates were required to do presentations and answer enquires from the experts at an online meeting on the streaming platform ZOOM. After two days of intense competition, 20 special prizes and 43 first prizes were selected among 63 candidates, representing the high level of teaching with the University.
Vice deans responsible for teaching affairs from different schools and academic program leaders were invited to participate in the meeting online to avoid the crowd of people during the pandemic period, and to promote teaching through review of applications. The candidates introduced their achievements, focusing on the problems with their teaching, their creative approach to solve the problems, the results and their future work plan. The experts interchanged their opinions with the candidates and made suggestions.

According to Professor HUANG Yiru, dean of the Undergraduate School, Tongji University, the university-level teaching achievement awards which is held every two years, aims at "promoting teaching and reform through review of teaching achievements". Both the University and schools concerned will learn from the past experience and identify the problems and find out solutions from the application and review process. The Undergraduate School has made great efforts in its attempt to integrate those seemingly unrelated teaching achievements from different schools by breaking the barriers between disciplines, and awarding exemplar teaching achievements. The selected teaching achievements will be further developed with strong support from the University, and eventually become Shanghai and/or national teaching achievements awards winners. It is hoped that teaching achievement awards will help promote teaching and teaching reform as well as talent cultivation, which will result in further improvement of the education of our university and the quality of talent cultivation.
