Tongji alumna GU Shi launches the first science fiction short-story collection Mobius Continuum

April 22, 2020

On April 8, the science fiction collection "Mobius Continuum" was officially jointly published by Baguangfen Culture and New Star Press. It is GU Shi’s first science fiction short-story collection. Awarded the Chinese Science Fiction Nebula Prize, this book has been highly praised by several famous writers such as LIU Cixin, LIU Yukun and DING Mo.

LIU Cixin believes that this science fiction collection can not only meet the expectations of science fiction fans but also interest and inspire readers not normally exposed to science fiction and that GU’s potential as a science fiction writer cannot be under-estimated. LIU Yukun said of her, “her amazingly classical narrative even conforms to that of the traditional drama. It is so organized that even Aristotle would nod in agreement”. And DING Mo paid great compliments to GU in creating fantastic science fiction realms, one after another.

Mobius Continuum is the summary of GU's eight-year devotion to science fiction. It includes both popular stories such as "Mosaic" and "Mobius Continuum" and unpublished, fine-crafted stories. Such cutting-edge topics as artificial intelligence, memory access, human hibernation, brain-computer interface and gene editing have all been covered in her stories. Her work is meticulous in content and beautiful in style, giving the readers inspiration for their imagination to flourish. The unbiased insight on science fiction, the warm glow of romance and the adventure of the mystery novel have all been harvested in this excellent work.

GU is more than a science fiction writer, however. She is, actually, a senior urban planner. She has obtained her Bachelor's degree in urban planning at Tongji University and afterwards a Master's degree at the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design. During the day, she designs real-world cities, and by night she continues to fabricate cities in her stories.

Since 2011, she has published more than 20 science fiction novels in well- known magazines such as Science Fiction World, Super Nice and New Science Fiction and in platforms including Clarkesworld and XPRIZE. Her better known works Gambling Brain won the Best Novella Award at the Thirtieth Galaxy Awards and the Best Novella Silver Award at the Tenth Chinese Science Fiction Nebula Award. Mobius Continuum won the Best Short Story Award at the 28th Galaxy Awards. Furthermore, Chimera won the Seventh Global Chinese Science Fiction Nebula Gold Award: its English version was listed for the 2017 Hugo Awards Best Nebula.
