Sakura blossoms will eventually be in full bloom

April 06, 2020

On April 2, a letter from Miss Yurie Hamo, an undergraduate student of Tongji University, arrived at the International School from Japan. In the letter, she expressed her thoughts about her home university, her concern for her teachers and classmates, and her good wishes for the future. Here is her letter.

The spring is coming amid cold weather, time for admiring the Sakura blossoms every year. The Sakura blossoms in Japan have been blooming gradually. The photos of the unrivaled beauty of the pink blossoms remind me of the stunningly beautiful Sakura Avenue at the Siping Campus, Tongji University.

I have fond memories under the Sakura tree on campus. Sometime last year, I danced a house dance with my friends from the anime society. After practicing softball with my teammates, I sat down for a picnic under a tree where a kitten was a regular visitor. The kitten spent many afternoons with me under the tree ever since.

“When is the time when I miss you most? It is when the moonlight spills on the window”. As is depicted in the classical Chinese poem, whenever the moonlight shines on the window, I can't help thinking of my relatives and friends. Are you okay in China? In Japan, there were 1401 confirmed cases of COVID-19, among which 359 cases were cured, and 47 people died. There is no confirmed case in Sawara, Chiba Prefecture, my hometown. Everyone isolates themselves at home, and does not go out when it is not necessary. They wear a mask when going out, and wash their hands for disinfection upon returning home.

I was moved when I read a news report about China’s donation of COVID-19 testing kits and masks to Japan. My heartfelt gratitude was beyond words. China and Japan have formed a close cooperative partnership in recent years, which is not only of great benefit to both countries, but also a responsible approach to restoring the world economy. As an international student, we should study hard to contribute to the friendship between China and Japan.

Online teaching has been going on for a month. My initial worries about online learning are gone when I have gradually adapted to this new teaching mode. Although it is an online course, I can feel that my teachers and the University care about us in every possible way. In order to ensure the quality of online teaching, our teachers purchased teaching facilities for their new teaching plans, spend a lot of extra time to mark our homework, and give us valuable suggestions. When we have difficulties, our tutor would offer us her timely kind help. I am increasingly convinced that the University is our backbone.

I wish when the spring arrives, the pandemic be defeated and the mountains and rivers be safe and sound. May my thoughts be with you, and you and I be both well. The Sakura blossoms will eventually bloom, and the day we meet is not far off.
