On April 3, 2019, a symposium on the construction of new majors was held at Tongji University to examine the one-year progress of the 10 new majors that were approved last year.

Of the 10 new undergraduate majors at Tongji university, seven are related to Emerging Engineering Education, including Intelligent Construction, Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering, Data Science and Big Data Technology, Marine Technology, New Energy Materials and Devices, Microelectronics Science and Engineering, and Vehicle Engineering (four-year program).

Tongji University is the only university approved to set up the major of Intelligent Construction. This major is based on Civil Engineering with interdisciplinary input of knowledge from Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanics, Materials, Information, Control, and Engineering Management, so as to train students to be competent for intelligent planning and design, intelligent equipment and construction, as well as intelligent operation and management of civil and architecture after graduation. Tongji University is the only first-class university among the four universities that got approval to establish the major of Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering. Last August, the Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering Professional Association, initiated by the College of Mechanical Engineering, Tongji University, was jointly launched by nearly 40 universities and 10 well-known enterprises. Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies and other textbooks designed for the main courses will be published soon.
