From March 19^th to 20^th, people gathered in Shanghai for the International Brain Initiative (IBI) Coordinating Body Meeting which was organized by the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Science and Technology, China. A total of 80 participants from Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, Korea, the United States, as well as from EFNS (European Federation of Neurological Societies), attended the meeting, which was supported by Shanghai Research Center for Brain Science & Brain-Inspired Intelligence, School of Medicine of Tongji University and Tongji Hospital.

The participants exchanged ideas on the progress of IBI, the working mechanism and main responsibilities of IBI, and explored the future trend, operation mode and implementation path of IBI. Linda Richards, President of the Australasian Neuroscience Society, and Caroline Montojo, Director of Brain Initiatives at the Kavli Foundation, respectively introduced IBI's organizational structure, vision, responsibilities and overall work plan. Representatives of the Brain Initiative from different countries introduced the general situation, progress and development plan in their own countries. Prof. PEI Gang, Prof. ZHANG Xu, and Prof. LUO Minmin introduced China's major research progress and important initiatives in brain science research in recent years.

During the meeting, participants had discussions on developing international brain science cooperation, promoting new discoveries and technological advances in brain science, and improving human well-being. Based on current work progress, they agreed upon the focus of IBI’s future work, including establishing innovative cooperation mechanism for the transformation and application of research findings, attaching importance to data privacy and multi-party data sharing on human brain related to cognition, building a regulatory mechanism in accordance with scientific ethics, and promoting education and popularization of brain science research findings.
