On January 17th, Elsevier, an information and analytics company and one of the world's major providers of scientific, technical, and medical information, released a list of Most Cited Chinese Researchers in 2018, which included 1899 scholars from 229 universities, research institutes and enterprises in China.

Scopus of Elsevier provided database and technical solutions for the rankings. Scopus, as one of the world’s largest database of abstracts and citations, contains over 20,000 peer-reviewed journals, including over 500 Chinese journals. According to the database of Scopus, over 3 million publications had their authors’ addresses as Chinese (mainland) institutions, and over 4 million ones the authors as Chinese.

Thirty-three scholars of Tongji University were listed, ranking 8th in universities in China.
