Last week, the telephone booths along the Siping Road of Yangpu District seemed to become sensational overnight. These old telephone booths which had simply become roadside decorations, were turned into art gallery and caught the eye of passers-by. The ‘Telephone Booth Art Gallery’ was among the activities in the third season of Open Your Space (OYS), a community innovation event organized by the College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University and the Siping Community.
On Dec. 23rd, the third season of OYS was launched at the Shanghai Urban Science Laboratory at No. 260, Fuxin Road, Yangpu District.
At the launching ceremony, Mrs. DU Juan, Director of the Siping Neighborhood Office, said, ‘it is impossible to do large-scale renovation on the established Siping Road. Therefore, slight face-lift like OYS can make the urban space more reasonable and humane, which helps add flavor, vigor and artistic elements to the community.’
The activity which borrowed the idea of mass art and public participation, intended to engage more people in an endeavor to build a cozy Siping Community and to bring more artistic features to the community environment.
