On November 21st 2016, HSBC Cup SAS Data Mining Champion of Chinese Universities 2016 came to a close in Beijing. Two teams of Tongji University, one from School of Mathematical Sciences made of undergraduate students and postgraduate students from School of Mathematical Sciences, and the other postgraduate students from College of Transportation Engineering of postgraduate students, Tongji University, succeeded in stood out from 658 teams of 24 divisions in 18 cities, winning the final entry tickets to the final and will participating in the final competition together with other 130 teams out of 658 teams of 24 divisions from cities in China. At last In fact, the two teams achieved the top 20 and top 30 respectively.

When looking back upon the exciting competing process, LI Zhong, the team leader of School of Mathematical Sciences said that the competition was very challenging, because everybody in his team got to have solid basic knowledge of statistics, proficient capability of using SAS software programming and close cooperation given the short time for finishing competition projects. This was the first time for Tongji University to participate in SAS Data Mining Champion in contrast to traditional strong teams like Peking University, Renmin University of China, Fudan University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. The teams were happy to win honors for Tongji and extended their gratitude towards the care and guidance they had received from the university in their preparation for and during the competition. LI also hoped more Tongji students take active parts in this competition and become the mainstay at the Age of Big Data.
