On 26thMay, the establishment of School of Chemical Science and Engineering was officially pronounced by Tongji University at Room 120 in Huaxue Building.
The Department of Chemistry was established in 1937. The first head of the department was Prof. Wang Baoren, who was also the first dean of the School of Sciences which was established in the same year. From 1937 to 1952, the department of chemistry successfully cultivated many talents, including six students who later became members of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tang Youqi, Lu Peizhang, Huang Zhitang, Cao Chunan, Qi Zhengwu and Deng Jingfa.
In the restructuring of departments in 1952, a part of the department of chemistry were acquired by Fudan University, another part was moved to East China Chemical College (the current East China University of Science and Technology), and still another part moved to Harbin Military Engineering Institute. From 1960 to 1964, Tongji University provided courses in applied chemistry for three consecutive years before it was suspended for the second time.
In 1978, courses in applied chemistry were restored at Tongji. The Department of Chemistry was restored in 1982. Over the thirty years, the department has been authorized to enroll Master’s and PhD students in chemistry, chemical engineering and technology. It has gradually gained its influences both at home and abroad by running post-doctoral mobile station and Shanghai Key Laboratory for Chemical Analysis, Risk Assessment and Control.
