On the evening of May 15th, the result was announced of the 2016 International Young Architects Design Competition on Cultural Buildings in Shanghai. Dr. Li Li along with his team from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University won the first prize for their design of the East Wing of Shanghai Museum.

The theme of the competition was Culture Enlightens the City, under which the East Wing of Shanghai Museum had a sub-theme of Heritage & Classics, calling for a full demonstration of the important role that Shanghai Museum had played in keeping the heritage and passing the classics of Shanghai. It was meant to create a landmark for cultural communication between cities which integrated protection, promotion and education of cultures. The proposal, featuring a natural and simple style, made by Li Li, Xiao Yunfeng, Pan Lingfei, and Gaoshan from Tongji University gained high recognition from the judges who believed the designers had a profound understanding and control over the museum’s features in terms of its function, streamline and space. The architectural layout indicated a harmonious traditional Chinese courtyard space concept which presented a good balance between yin and yang; in addition, its pure space and simple outlook coupled with a rich variety in the use of materials created a strong contemporary sense.
