Yang Xianjin mentioned in his speech that the history of the School of Humanities could be traced back to 1940s when it established the first school of philosophy in Shanghai by gathering a number of famous scholars of humanities at Tongji. Since the School was restored in 2006, it has made remarkable achievements in teaching. He hoped that the 70th anniversary marked a new starting point for teachers and students in the school to inherit and develop the good tradition of humanities at Tongji University and to make more progress to contribute to the renaissance of the nation.

The School of Humanity has managed to keep pace with the time by being International, General and Creative in running its teaching programs since 2006. Over the years, it has developed a modern system for humanities education with Tongji characteristics based upon the three traditional disciplines of literature, history and philosophy supplemented by such new and application disciplines as culture, creative industry and psychology.
With the motto of Humanities for a Better World in place, the school of humanities will join hands with other schools of liberal art in moving forward with one heart and one dream and in making more contributions for the people, for the whole world and for the same planet.
