Humboldt Research Award Granted to Professor ZHU Hehua

The 44th Humboldt Research Award Ceremony was recently held by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bamberg, Germany, a city with a history of over one thousand years. Professor ZHU Hehua from College of Civil Engineering, Tongji University, attended the ceremony on invitation as an award winner. He was the only scholar in China and the only scholar in the field of civil engineering in the world who won this award in 2015. In addition to award presentation, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation also invited four award winners from the U.S., Brazil, New Zealand and Israel to make academic reports on their latest achievements in linguistics, ecological environment science, botany and medical instrument.

Established in 1972 by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Humboldt Research Award is specially programmed to honor and recognize top non-German scholars who have attained remarkable achievements in their research fields. Sixty four award winners attended the ceremony, some of whom were award winners of the last year. The winners have done their research in diverse fields ranging from languages, culture, music, play, politics, philosophy, history, religion, economics medicine to natural and engineering science. Furthermore, the number of award winners in the field of natural science was twenty-two while that in the field of engineering science was thirteen. Additionally, thirty award winners were Americans (including three Chinese Americans) mainly from world-class colleges and universities such as Harvard University, Stanford University, Princeton University, Yale University, University of California, Northwest University, Duke University, and University of Virginia, which demonstrated the great strength and influence of the US in their science and technology talent pool; eight award winners were British, mainly from leading universities like University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Imperial College London and University College London; and five award winners were Asians who were from China, Japan, Viet Nam and Malaysia.
