Tongji University has successfully completed a research project on High Energy X-ray Focusing Technology, which was part of, a space science pilot project on an X-ray Timing and Polarization (XTP) Background Prototype headed by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) with support from the Twelfth Five-Year Plan Program. The university was responsible for developing technology used for manufacturing an optical system of XTP satellite body load. It was the first time for Tongji to do preliminary research independently on large-scale space science satellite body load for the Fourteenth Five-Year Plan program.

The project team presented three reports on Summary of High Energy X-ray Focusing Technology, Optical Performance Tests and Mechanical Performance Tests to an expert assessment team, who also reviewed such technical documents as Report on Optical Design of High Energy X-ray Focusing Telescopes and Report on Key Technologies of High Energy X-ray Focusing Telescopes and inspected physical results of the project, the prototype and laboratories. The expert team agreed that Tongji University had established a research platform in support for research on high energy X-ray focusing telescope technology and developed key technologies for R&D of high energy X-ray focusing telescopes, which demonstrated the ability of the university to develop high energy X-ray focusing telescopes for XTP. The prototype of high energy X-ray focusing telescope was the first of its kind in China, the optical and mechanical tests of which showed that it had met the standards for the project. The project successfully passed the technical assessment by the expert team.
