From Feb. 26th to March 4th, a university delegation led by Prof. YANG Xianjin, chairman of the Tongji University, visited the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT), a Ngethu water plant, Ministry of Higher Education of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa University and African Union Commission in Kenya and Ethiopia and signed cooperation agreements. Prof. YANG Xianjin also visited the Chinese ambassador to Kenya, and conducted in-depth talks with Chinese representatives with UNEP and UN-HABITAT. Xinhua News Agency, China Radio International and China Daily jointly interviewed Prof. YANG during his trip to Africa.

In Kenya, Prof.YANG and UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director Mr. Achim Steiner renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for further cooperation between Tongji University and UNEP in the following five years. Both sides will continue to make joint efforts to further develop UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) at a faster pace so as to turn IESD into a globally-recognized center for sustainable development of education & research and for South-South cooperation, and into a think tank for providing professional counseling on environment and sustainable development around the world.
