On February 29, Mr. Achim Steiner, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and Yang Xianjin, Chairman of Tongji University Council, signed aMemorandum of Understanding (MoU)to renew the cooperation between UNEP and Tongji University for the next 5 years. The signing ceremony was held at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, capital of Kenya.

The renewed partnership between UNEP and Tongji University will promote further development of UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD). Both sides will make endeavors to build it into a globally recognized center for higher education in sustainable development, scientific research, and South-South cooperation and into a think tank that provides solutions for global environment and sustainable development.
