Prof. CHEN Yihan has been committed to cardiological clinic work and basic research for years. He discovered the human atrial fibrillation pathogenic gene and diagnosed part of genetics and electrophysiology mechanisms for human atrial fibrillation in 2003. His research result was published on Science. His research team has since made a number of significant discoveries in mechanism and intervention of arrhythmia including atrial fibrillation, which has won international recognition for China in arrhythmia research. The research team of Arrhythmia Mechanism Research headed by him won sponsorship from the Innovative Research Group Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. His discoveries have been quoted in textbooks and books in the world, e.g. in Braunwald's Heart Disease: A Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine, an international authoritative textbook on cardiology, and in Cardiac Electrophysiology: From Cell to Bedside, a book on cardiac electrophysiology. International guidelines for diagnosis and treatment also make reference to their research results from time to time. Prof. CHEN has won a number of awards as the first person of his research projects including the second prize of National Natural Science Award, first prizes of Natural Science Award of Ministry of Education and of Shanghai Municipal Natural Science Award.

Professor CHANG Qing has devoted himself to pioneering research on architecture for decades. He proposed an alternative approach of

Adaptive Regeneration between "maintaining architectural heritage" and “establishing new buildings by demolishing the old” to keep local and traditional features for diversified and balanced development in urban and rural areas. A new discipline of Regeneration of Historic Environment was developed based upon this approach, which contributed to the establishment of the basic tenets of Regeneration of Historic Environment theory up to international academic standards and suitable for Chinese cultural context. He initiated an interdisciplinary Historical Buildings Conservation Protection Construction program, the first of its kind in China, by integrating architecture with such construction and liberal arts disciplines as civil engineering, building materials, history, cultural heritage and museology. He successfully led a number of significant conservation and regeneration designs including Shanghai Bund areas and Sangzhutse Fortress in Shigatse of Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region, which not only provided typical cases of best practice, but led the exploration in construction for regeneration of historical environment in China. He was elected to honorary fellow status of the American Institute of Architects (Hon. FAIA) in 2009 and has won a number of national and international awards and prizes including the first International Holcim Awards Gold for Sustainable Construction at Asia Pacific in 2005, the first prize of Excellent Engineering Design from the Ministry of Education in 2011, the first prize of the National Civil Engineering and Surveying Design of Excellence in 2011, and the Gold Medal of the Architects Regional Council Asia Award for Architecture in 2015.

Names of 2015 members of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) were also released. Two Tongji alumni were elected as CAE members. They are CHEN Lieyun from School of Civil Engineering & Mechanics of Huazhong University of Science and Technology who obtained his PhD from Department of Management Science and Engineering of Tongji University in 2003, and LI Jiabiao from the Second Institute of Oceanography, SOA, China who did his Master's degree at Department of Ocean Geology and graduated from Tongji University in 1989.
