In the afternoon of November the 2nd, the prize-giving ceremony of the 2015 "FLTRP cup" of National English Contest for College Students was held in the School of Foreign Languages of Tongji University. Pei Gang, the principal of the University, presented certificates to the awarded students. Superintendents from office of academic affairs and School of Foreign Languages, together with awarded students and their instructors, attended the ceremony. Lang Siqiao, instructed by teacher Qian Yang, won the championship in the National English Writing Contest in Shanghai arena. Chen Jingyi was rewarded the first prize, and Zhang Rui, the second. Both Zhang Shencheng and Wang Haoda, who shared the same instructor: teacher Zhang Tie, won the outstanding winner. Guided by teacher Wang Jie, Tian Yuan got the first prize in the 2015 “FLTRP Cup” of National English Speech Contest for College Students in Shanghai arena.

During the ceremony, Wei Linzhuo, from the School of Civil Engineering, made a speech on behalf of the awarded students. He shared his inner journey about his studying English in Tongji University and the contest. He also expressed his gratitude to teachers from the Department of College English and the students who had helped and supported him throughout the preparation.. Jiang Qtinfang, a teacher from Department of College English and the general director of the contest, expressed her gratitude to the instructors who made selfless dedication to this contest, with their excellent work. She also congratulated the awarded students on their performances. Song Yin, a teacher from the Department of College English, briefed some information about English teaching reform and some achievements made by the teachers of Department of College English. In her speech, she focused mostly on the diverse individualized English teaching modes in college. And then, Mr. Wang Xiaoguo, the deputy director of office of academic affairs, reviewed the achievements that students of Tongji University made at home and abroad during this year. The deputy director through his intervention showed his strong support for the English teaching reform in the College.

The event was concluded by the intervention of Principal Pei Gang that suggested teachers should make persistent efforts to get greater achievements in combining English contest with daily English teaching, in order to help students blend their academic study with English study. He also pointed out that foreign language teaching should be combined with liberal education, to promote the all-round development of students' knowledge, ability and personality. He encouraged all faculties in School of Foreign Languages to actively explore the training modes of versatile talents, like the mode of dual degree system for undergraduate students and the mode of major-minor system. What’s more, he hoped teachers could learn from their experiences, expand the cooperation between different disciplines.It was emphasized that students should learn knowledge both in depth and breadth, in order to train them as talented people who can meet the international standards. He also suggested that the School of Foreign Languages should make full use of the English teaching resources on and off campus, and adopt more cultural elements in foreign language teaching, thus brought foreign language learning, academic learning and community activities to a better combination.
