Inauguration of Joint International Research Laboratory of Transportation Safety

November 01, 2015

A Joint International Research Laboratory of Transportation Safety established collaboratively by Tongji University (TJU) and other ten international universities and institutions, such as Purdue University and University of Central Florida of America, DeutschesZentrumfürLuft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) and Darmstadt University of Technology of Germany, and University of Tokyo and Kyoto University of Japan, was inaugurated on Jiading Campus of TJU on Oct. the 29th. Focusing on the national vital demands, the laboratory will conduct a systematic study on the core safety control issue of “people, vehicle, road, administration”, in order to achieve world-leading research results. Meanwhile, it aims to gather international academic expertise in the field of transportation safety to lead the communication and transportation discipline at TJU to be an advanced one in the world, and to explore the international cooperation and administration system of the laboratory, in order to build it into a world-class transportation safety laboratory before 2020.

“Transportation safety has become a heated issue in the World. In 2014 alone traffic accidents killed 1.24 million people around the world.” said Prof. Fang Shouen, vice Party Secretary of TJU and chairman of the first session of academic committee of joint laboratory. According to Prof. Fang, with increasing traffic demand triggered by rapid development of motorization and urbanization, transportation safety has become a more and more serious problem in China. A solution is desperately needed. Compared to those in developed countries, the traffic accident death tolls in China are high. In 2013, the mortality per ten thousand vehicles in China is 2.34, while this number is only 1.28 in America, 0.7 in Germany, and 0.6 in Japan. The mortality in China is two to four timesasgreater than in the developed countries. The issue involves multiple factors: people, vehicle, road and administration. The improvement of transportation safety is not only a problem in the field of traffic engineering, but also an issue requiring cross-disciplinary coordination. At this stage, China is still lagging behind developed countries in the basic theory and key technology of transportation safety. Therefore the cooperation with international researchers and the establishment of the laboratory will contribute to the development of transportation safety research and application in China in line with world-class standard.

The Joint International Research Laboratory of Transportation Safety of TJU will actively participate in improving the situation of transportation safety in China, in order to solve the urgent problems: in terms of the basic theory research. The laboratory will conduct a research on the behavioral characteristics and analytical methods of transportation safety based on the 8DOF Driving Simulator of TJU and Natural Driving Experiment in Shanghai. In terms of the key technologies, the laboratory will mainly explore the risk assessment technology of transportation safety system and situational identification technology, as well as the prevention effectiveness technology of transportation safety. while for the engineering application, the laboratory will compile manuals of transportation safety and develop the comprehensive information service system of transportation safety.

According to our correspondent, the School of Transportation Engineering of TJU has completed a series of major scientific research tasks in the field of transportation safety, and has established a long-term and stable international cooperative relationship with some first-class international universities. The inauguration of the Joint International Research Laboratory will continue and deepen the international cooperative research in the field of transportation safety. It will analyze two basic theoretical fields: “The behaviors of transportation participants” and “The causes of transportation accidents”. The laboratory will also conduct world leading researches in the fields of the improvement of transportation behaviors assessment and optimization of the safety of facility design”, Safety management of transportation based on informatization, and on the intelligent vehicle infrastructure and active safety of vehicles.. The laboratory will set up international cooperative fund, hold international symposiums regularly and introduce international talents by means of various channels and enable it to be the world-class open platform of transportation safety through the efforts in the next five years.
