Swiping the card, verifying identity and submitting documents! All this was done in just a couple of minutes and the registration completed. There was no crowd, no long wait in a queue in Zonghe Lou, a multi-function building on Siping Road Campus.

On 5thSept. 2015, 3,923 undergraduates from all over the country registered as students of Tongji University. 3,874 students were admitted from mainland China and the remaining 49 from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Among them, there were 2,424 male students, accounting for 61.79% of the total number of new students and 1,499 females for 38.21%. 876 students from the mainland were from the countryside, accounting for 22.6% of the total. 98% freshmen had completed their registration by 3 p.m. on the day of registration.
Tongji had made great efforts in IT application for an optimized system of registration procedure. The newly developed scan and register software greatly improved registration process and largely reduced student waiting time, which amazed students and their parents. A website for new students was especially set up to help the freshmen find information related to their arrival at Tongji. They may find service they needed under the columns of Food at Tongji, Maps of Campuses Transportation and Life Guide on the website. Freshmen could also make money transfer online through Alipay. Data of freshmen were automatically transferred to the Student Information Management System, bringing convenience and efficiency to student administration later on. On this registration day, registration status of students from different departments and schools was updated on the e-screens in Zonghe Lou and near the entrance of the university.

On this very day, a Green Path was opened for students from economically difficult families in Xingzheng Lou, the administration building on Siping Road campus. In addition to deferred tuition payments, packs of benevolence were given to these students: 350 school bags worthy of RMB400yuancontaining stationery and daily necessities, 100 Color Life Cards worthy of RMB600yuancontaining a transportation card, a book card, a telephone card, a shopping card and some bedding. Soon after the new term began, the university departments concerned would look into individual cases of all new students and provide a special fund of RMB250,000yuanfor 400 freshmen to meet their urgent needs in daily life. The university planned to finish the filing of nearly 4,000 freshmen to determine a list of students whose families have financial difficulties in supporting their study as soon as possible in order to arrange the follow-up support.


After days of careful preparations, Mr. Tong Qihua, a distinguished alumnus of Year 1995 who was the chairman of Hangzhou Ganqiwei Food Co. Ltd made the arrangement for 14 cooks from his company at Hangzhou to set up a temporary kitchen on Siping Road campus. They madesteamed buns on the spot and provided two free buns to each freshman. They would offer 20,000 free buns to new students, 100,00 buns to undergraduates on 5thand the other 10,000 buns to postgraduates on 6thSept. 2015.

The Alumni Home of Tongji University in Xuri Building extended a special warm welcome to the freshmen. Every new student could get with their freshmen card a customized skin cover, a free laundry coupon, a free family photo taken by a photographer which would be sent free along with a Tongji postcard and a free XuRi coffee. All this came from resources of Tongji UniversityAlumni Association. These activities undoubtedly helped Tongji freshmen experience Tongji alumni culture sooner as well as enhance their identity of and confidence in TongjiUniversity.
