The Selection Contest in East China for The China University Robot Competition RoboMasters 2015 was co-hosted by the School and College Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the Secretariat of All-China Students’ Federation. It was held June 6th and 7th in the gymnasium on the Southern Campus of Tongji University. Twenty-three teams from 17 universities in East China took part in the competition.

RoboMasters is a new dual meet of robots similar to war games. The robots designed and fabricated by the participants fired at each other and completed appointed tasks. The competition was judged by using an established evaluation system. The game took the form of a confrontation between the red team and the blue team, with a time limit of 5 minutes. The real strike, 5V5 confrontation, high altitude surveillance of the sentry robots, and the high-tech battleground immersed the audience in the fierce competition. With the latest robot technology and the elements of electronic sports, each team designed and fabricated two infantry fighting vehicles, two shooting vehicles and one artillary vehicle (with a sentry) for the competition. The 5V5 confrontations were conducted in a battleground with many passages, watchtowers, trenches, one-way bridges, revolving doors, hinged doors, mazes, tunnels and bridges with ditches. The cameras on the fighting vehicles shot the scene of the battleground and transmitted it to the headquarters through a wireless network. Then the commanders remotely controlled the fighting vehicles to protect their own base and to attack the base of their rivals. Each vehicle had a sensor which calculated the number of shots and displayed the current status of the fighting vehicle. According to the rules, the bodies in the vehicles were made of materials that could be broke by plastic bullets. The sensor calculated the number of bodies being shot and showed the total on the display. Vehicles being shot too many times would be shut off automatically and removed from the game. The competition was divided into group matches and a knockout match. In the group competition, 23 teams were reduced to eight finalists. The top teams were selected to compete in the knockout match. In the knockout match, the “best of three sets” was employed to decide the champion.

The eight teams waged a hard competition in the knockout match. Ultimately, RCS Duxing Team from Xiamen University won the championship. Lingyun Team from Tongji University successfully overcame the challenges of losing their first game and eventually qualified for the final which will be held in Shenzhen.
