On May 24th, the “Wind fluttered--the Kunqu Opera Youth Exchange” performances, hosted by the Shanghai University students practice base of opera art of Tongji University and supported by the Kunqu Academy of Tongji university, was held at the 119 Auditorium of Tongji University. College student associations from Fudan University, East China Normal University, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Nanjing Forestry University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Central Academy of Fine Arts and Zhejiang University were invited to participate. MA Jinming, Vice Secretary of the Party, together with college teachers and students, watched the performance.

The performance was divided into three sections: Beautiful Flowers Bloom, Youth Passes as a Fleeting Wave, and an Old Tree Tenders New Hair fully displayed the charming art of Kunqu Opera from simple to complex. Performers included: Sheng (the role of a male actor), Dan (the role of a female actor), Jing (the actor with a painted face) and Chou (the role of a clown) were extraordinarily splendid. The students not only demonstrated the traditional sit and sing ditty art, but also presented the beauty of Kunqu Opera. It is worth mentioning that apart from inheriting a good tradition, the students have the courage to bring forth new ideas. For example,Gone with the Kunqu Operais a play, which skillfully merges Kunqu Opera with drama through the love story of Zhang Yuanhe and Gu Chuanjie that is both unique and refreshing. A few wonderful fragments from “Jing Meng”,”Chi Meng”, “Jing Bian”, “Qin Tao”, “Xue Tang”, “Shan Men”, and “Ci Hu” portrayed the students’ love for ancient art and heritage. They won the applause of the audience with their youthful faces and skillful performance.

TIAN Enrong, a national level actor and professor of Shanghai Theatre Academy said, “I was deeply moved by the performance of students. The traditional art of Kunqu Opera can coruscate and give new vitality in this era. The students’ contribution cannot go unnoticed. The enthusiasm of the young generation is the driving force for the development of the traditional opera art. We hope that opera art will thrive in colleges and universities."
