During the afternoon of May 26th, tutors who voluntarily supported education in Dingxi reported their experiences in the Siping Campus auditorium. Dingxi’s Municipal Party Secretary, Zhang Lingping, Mayor Tang Xiaoming, Deputy Mayors Zhang Yidu and Guo Weituan, Deputy Party Secretary of Tongji University, Xu Jianping, and Deputy Party Secretary and Qi Ming. Vice President of Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade and former Chief of Students’ Affairs Division of Tongji University attended the meeting.

This report meeting is an innovation of the course “Situation and Policy” of Tongji University. Six representative tutors, Zhang Yu, Zhang Xiaofa, Fang Liang, Jiang Yiqiu, Cheng Li, and Lin Yu shared their voluntary teaching experience in Dingxi. Their reports included perspectives of the local conditions and customs, classroom teaching, educational donation and social service. They talked about their experiences in detail. With words and pictures, they vividly showed the admirable spirit of the locals in the face of a harsh natural environment and backward economy, which deeply moved all the audience. The tutors also said that they were deeply touched by the industriousness of local students. With the help of local teachers, tutors from Tongji University managed to help the students build self-confidence, widen their horizon, find the appropriate learning approach and improve their abilities. While focusing on classroom teaching, the tutors also organized colorful extracurricular activities to enrich the students’ after-school life and improve their overall awareness. After three months of voluntary education support, a deep affection was formed between tutors from Tongji University and local citizens of Dingxi.

It was in 1995 that Tongji University started this cooperative enterprise with the Gansu Province. During the last two decades, Tongji University has been building the Base for Voluntary Tutors in Dingxi, and has sent 26 groups for a total 126 tutors to voluntarily teach in Dingxi. These young tutors have firmly held the sense of social responsibility toward the national conditions and gradually formed a spirit of “selfless devotion, ceaseless self-improvement and moral cultivation”. They brought this spirit back to the campus by holding a report meeting in each of the last four years. To date, there has been eight such meetings with a total audience of over 20,000 students. Meanwhile, they spread the same spirit in their daily lives, which influences every student they meet.
