A series of activities were held in the exhibition hall of C Building of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Prof. FENG Jizhong, on May 20th, which is the 108thanniversary of the founding of Tongji University. The series of activities included the photography and video exhibition of Prof. FENG’s lifetime, the unveiling ceremony of Prof. FENG’s statue, the release ceremony of the series of books based on Prof. FENG’s research, and a commemorative symposium. Prof. ZHENG Shiling, a member of CAS, Prof. WU Jiang, Vice President of Tongji University, Ms. FENG Ye, Prof. FENG’s daughter, Mr. CAO Jiaming, President of Shanghai Academy of Architecture, Mr. ZHAO Bing and Mr. WANG Mingxian, editors of the series of books in Prof. FENG research, Mr. XU Fang, President of the East China Branch of China Building Industry Press, and heads of some universities, special guests, Prof. FENG’s students, faculty and students of Architecture and Urban Planning and some media attended the activities.
Many photos of Prof. FENG showing his experiences in his early years and in his teaching career at Tongji were displayed in the exhibition. The photos unfolded the great contributions and achievements that Prof. FENG made in the fields of architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture before the eyes of audience.
In his speech delivered at the opening ceremony of the series of commemorative activities, Prof. ZHENG Shiling highly praised the great contributions that Prof. FENG made as the founder of modern architecture in China and the originator of urban planning and landscape architecture in China. Prof. WU Jiang pointed out that the future architects being trained at Tongji should inherit not only the academic theories of Prof. FENG, but also his ideas and spirits and should regard him as their spiritual mentor. Prof. WU expounded the significance of Prof. FENG’s theory with its advancement and its ideological and cultural value. He called on the faculty and students of Tongji to inherit and develop the theory and ideas of Prof. FENG, and pushed the Tongji architectural school to the peak of China’s architecture.
At the commemorative symposium, the guests engaged in an in-depth discussion about Prof. FENG’s ideas of architecture and education. Mr. WANG Bowei and Mr. LIU Binyi, who were representatives of Prof. FENG’s students, each made a speech. They remembered the academic study and pursuits of Prof. FENG, as well as the edification given by him. Reverence and gratitude for Prof. Feng was expressed at the symposium.
