“An Assembly of Folk Songs, Classic Tunes and Masters across the Strait” was Held

What is a school folk song? To date, what’s been its development in China? How can we inherit the folk song spirit? As folk songs are gaining increasing popularity in universities on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, impressive interactions and performances were held in the auditorium in Siping Campus, Tongji University on the afternoon of March 13th. Nine guests from the music industry and academia attended the event, including the leading folk song producer and CEO of Star Music, Wang Xiangji, the renowned folk singer Qi Yu, the famous songwriter Fang Wenshan, the senior critic Jin Zhaojun, Professor Li Wei from Tongji University, and the duet:The South, who had won the Taiwan Golden Melody Award for the Best Group. There were 1,000 students and faculty members from Tongji University, Fudan University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and University of Shanghai for Science and Technology in the audience.

The forum was hosted by senior Taiwan media professional, Mr. Wang Zushou. All guests shared their own understanding of folk songs and expressed their expectations that a new generation could inherit school folk songs, which was warmly applauded by the audience. The forum also provided beautiful music. Autumn Cicada, Orchid Grass, Childhood and Stay Together by The South brought the audience back to their old days. When singer-songwriter, Ye Jiaxiu played and sang the classic Penghu Bay of Granny’s House, everyone in the audience stood up and together sang with him--filling the auditorium with applause and cheers.

During the Q&A, Tongji University students were very active. Their penetrating questions and the brilliant answers from the guests made the forum even more informative and wonderful.

After nearly 3 hours, the forum ended withCountry Path and Olive Treesung by renowned folk singer, Qi Yu. The beautiful songs lingered as did the common affection of comrades from both sides of the strait.
