On the afternoon of May 13, Mr. HAN Zheng, a member of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee and secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, inspected the Jiading Campus of Tongji University and held a symposium with the theme of “Building Shanghai into a Global Influential Technological Innovation Center.” He encouraged Tongji to make more contributions to the realization of the “Four Comprehensives” and to the construction of Shanghai’s Technological Innovation Center.

Accompanied by Prof. PEI Gang, President of Tongji University, and Prof. CHEN Yiyi, Managing Vice President of Tongji, HAN Zheng inspected the multifunctional Vibrostand of the Earthquake Engineering Building and the Shanghai Automobile Wind Tunnel Center. The Vibrostand provides a platform for the advanced simulation test of architecture and lifeline engineering. The Wind Tunnel Center serves a similar purpose for the research and development of automobile and rail transit. Hearing that it’s a public research platform is opening to institutions and enterprises, HAN Zheng was delighted and said, “The more open a platform becomes, the more valuable and authoritative will it become!” Furthermore, he took a test ride on the IGS, the first proprietary-brand intelligent car in China, which was collaboratively developed by the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation and Tongji University. New breakthroughs were achieved in the critical points of automatic driving, parking and retrieval of the intelligent car.

A symposium was held afterwards in the assembly room of Jiren Building, Jiading Campus. HAN Zheng heard reports themed around building Shanghai into a global influential technological innovation center, which were made by experts and scholars of Tongji University.

Finally, HAN Zheng provided the conclusion to the symposium. He said that universities should play an important role in pursuing the national strategy of building Shanghai into a global influential technological innovation center. To achieve this goal will require three concurrent initiatives: first, the institutional mechanisms of university research and study should be reformed and the marketization mechanism be employed in order to reach the national standard and to promote the achievements of scientific research. Second, the innovative efforts of governments, enterprises and universities should be integrated for the transformation of the achievements of scientific research into products that satify market needs. Third, creatively talented individuals should be cultivated and encouraged to start their own businesses, in order to give full play to their capabilities. HAN Zheng emphasized that we should free our minds and recognize the development tendencies of green, intelligent facilities and the Internet of Things and carry forward the development of the global influential technological innovation center with confidence and courage. He also said that famous universities, including Tongji University, have made great contributions to the economic and social development of Shanghai with their achievements in scientific research. The talents cultivated by universities will be the main force to build Shanghai into the global influential technological innovation center. “I hope that Tongji University will continue to make more contributions towards the realization of the “Four Comprehensives, the building of technological innovation center, and the construction of an international economic, financial, trading, and shipping center.” said HAN Zheng.
