The small black-and-white electric Formula car with a clean-cut shape was designed and developed by DIAN Racing, a students’ team from the School of Automobile Engineering of Tongji University. Meanwhile, the red-and-black gasoline-fueled car with sleek lines was designed by the Yichi Racing Team, who is also from the School of Automobile Engineering of Tongji University. The results of 12 new research projects of Tongji University, including the two above-mentioned cars, were unveiled at the inauguration of the China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair (CSITF), which was held at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center on April 23rd. Visitors were attracted to the Tongji exhibits and many of them asked for more information.

The two Formula cars were the newly designed in 2014. They each had their own innovative highlights. The electric car used a dual motor drive for the first time. Thirty percent of its components and parts were printed with 3D technology. Its maximum speed is 140km/h. For the gasoline-fueled car, its bodywork, front wings, rear wings, suspension and member bars of the under-pan were all made from a carbon fiber material. With its aerodynamic package, this car was lighter and faster. Both of the cars performed exceptionally well in the Formula Student China last year. The latter also earned a high ranking in the Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan.

The research results of Tongji displayed at the CSITF embodied environmentally-friendly ideas. The research project, Technology of Transforming Cooking Oil into Biodiesel and its Application was directed by the School of Automobile Engineering and has been put into use. Two processing units were invented, one which is able to refine 30,000 tons of biodiesel from cooking oil, and other one is able to produce 3,000 tons of emulsified diesel oil. It also developed a post-processing unit, which manages the biodiesel engine’s waste-gas. The technology is to make sure the safety of edible oil. The Informationalized Collection, Transportation and Disposal of Household Garbage in Megalopolis was conducted by the School of Environmental Science and Engineering. The School of Environmental Science and Engineering also invented the environmentally friendly biosurfactant, which has many potential applications in the fields of oil extraction and processing and of environmental modification. The thermal insulation material and the adsorbable environmentally friendly material was developed by the School of Physics Science and Engineering. This material is used to improve lighting and energy conservation in buildings; it facilitates the adsorption of hazardous gas, liquid and noise. The Upgrading and Reconstruction Technology of High Emission Standard Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant directed by the School of Environmental Science and Engineering has been successfully applied in the upgrading of the Longwangzui Sewage Treatment Plant in Wuhan. The biogas infrared radiation drum dryer invented by the School of Mechanical Engineering is used in the drying process of grain and other agricultural and industrial products.
