On the morning of March 25th, Prof. PEI Gang, President of Tongji University, met with the German musicians participating in the German Music Spring Concert held at Tongji in the Sino-French Center; he was accompanied by the Dean of the School of Arts and Media.

At the meeting, President PEI thanked the German musicians for their splendid performances. He pointed out that with its spirit of preciseness and carefulness, Germany nurtured its well-developed industrial civilization, and gained brilliant achievements in the fields of art and music. Meanwhile, as a top university known for its scientific study, Tongji has cultivated generations of students who are talented, hardworking, and full of creativity. Tongji is trying to improve the artistic and the humanistic qualities of students. Therefore the German musicians could make great contributions to the artistic education of Tongji students. The interdisciplinary collaboration between the arts and science will surely bring more inspiration and opportunities for their combined development.

The German musicians said that music is powerful enough to change a person’s state of life through its influence on the person’s spiritual world. During their visit, they felt the cultural atmosphere of Tongji and exchanged ideas with their local counterparts.
Afterwards, President PEI visited the rehearsal rooms in the Sino-French Center where the German musicians gave lessons to the students. He said that it is Tongji’s commission to cultivate talented students who are professional, humanistic, qualified, responsible and cooperative. He hoped that students could have more access to general humanities and artistic courses by adding these courses and canceling some of their professional courses. At the same time, it is hoped that the collaboration between Tongji University and its German counterparts in the fields of music and art can be extended to other fields.
