Weekly Concert, a new selective course offered by the School of Arts and Media of Tongji University, began in the 129 Auditorium, Siping Road Campus of Tongji University, on the evening of Mar. 5th. By staging performances instead of repeating theories, it tries to explain the theoretical knowledge of music through the concert. It also allows students to experience the artistic charm and philosophic thoughts that music contains. The course’s aim is to acquaint students with the relationship between the development of music and the history of humanity and to help them to gain their own unique appreciation of artistic experiences. The ultimate goal of the course is to infuse, through osmosis, a practical teaching and learning environment with artistic accomplishments and aesthetic values.

This selective course is available for all the students in Tongji, with no restriction to their majors. Five hundred-fifty students attended the first class of the course, which exceeded the traditional teaching pattern in scale and broke the record of the number of students attending the class. Consequently, greater access to live concerts is being provided to more students, in order to inspire their thoughts through the senses of sight and hearing.
The course’s weekly concert in this term will focus on the music of Mozart. Piano music, orchestral music and opera will be staged, with simple, but profound explanations of music theory and knowledge.
