Tongji University and Carl Zeiss Jena signed an agreement on the afternoon of Jan. 13th, to officially start Tongji-Zeiss Teaching and Research Base. Prof. WU Zhiqiang, vice president of Tongji University, and Mr. Maximilian Foerst, managing director of Zeiss Optical Instruments (Shanghai) International Trading Co. Ltd. made speeches respectively and jointly inaugurated the base. Prof. CHEN Ming, deputy dean of Sino-German College for Applied Sciences, Tongji University, and Mr. Maximilian Foerst signed a cooperation agreement afterwards.

As a Sino-German cooperation project between the two governments, Sino-German College for Applied Sciences has a history for more than ten years. It has been carrying out cooperation with German universities and enterprises for the goal of cultivating excellent engineers for the future. At the end of last year, it established the first Industry 4.0 - Intelligent Factory Laboratory in China, and has been conducting the research of Industry 4.0 and enhancing the cooperation with well-known enterprises from Germany on this basis.
As a German enterprise manufacturing optical system, industrial instrument and armarium, Zeiss enjoys a high reputation in the field of industrial measurement. Intelligence detection for Industry 4.0 product is the critical step of data acquisition and big data mining in quality control of work pieces. The hardware and software platform provided by Zeiss will promote the measuring system of globalized exchange and standardized sharing of information and detection report directly or through internet. It meets the requirements of Industry 4.0 for industrial big data mining, fusion and management. With the functions of system statistical analysis and personalized customization and edition for visual report, and with the compatibility with diversified measuring implements, it will aid the real time data collection, fusion and big data mining significantly.
Tongji University is constructing a curriculum system of Measurement by Geometric Quantities for teaching in cooperation with Zeiss. Students can improve their knowledge of interchangeability from traditional measuring technology to digital measurement or even to Intelligence detection technology though this curriculum. Students will get a qualification certificate issued by Zeiss after passing a practical training test. By combining the knowledge of engineering drawing dimension, digital measurement of work pieces, and quality process control of products, the curriculum aims at making students understand the method of determining measuring techniques according to engineering drawings, principles and methods of digital measurement, and applications and methods of digital measurement technology. In the field of research, Tongji will cooperate closely with Zeiss in online and offline detection, personalized rapid detection, and big data mining.
The cooperation between Sino-German College for Applied Sciences and Zeiss will benefit the teaching and research in many disciplines of our university. The laboratory will be open to teachers and students from related schools of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, of Electronics and Information Engineering, of Material Science and Engineering, of Surveying and Mapping and Geographic Information, Medical School, and School of Life Science and Technology.
