On the evening of December 16th, the Student Dance Troupe, which is a branch of Tongji Art Troupe, put on a special show for its 15th anniversary in the Auditorium 129, Siping Campus of Tongji University. The show, whose theme was Dance Your Dream to the Breeze on Wuyi Terrace, was part of the University 2014 Art Festival.

The line of, “To the Breeze on Wuyi Terrace,” comes from Chinese classicalAnalects. With 18 dances of different styles, members of the dance troupe innovatively interpreted the traditional Chinese culture. The show was divided into four parts: “The Ancient and the Modern,” “The Hard and the Soft,” “The Bitter and the Sweet,” and “The Intertwined Love and Hatred.” Each part had its distinctive features and in combination, they showed their understanding of dancing art. The audience strongly resonated with the performers’ rich mixture of emotional moves.

The show began with a quaint dance,Rules for Children, in which the performers dressed in elegant traditional Chinese costumes danced to background music played by traditional Chinese musical instruments—the Zhong and Qing. This dance showed the modern Chinese’s respect for our traditional etiquette. Next camePlucking Osmund, a dance in the Han and Tang Dynasties style where female dancers with graceful figures flew their water sleeves. In the modern dance, TheAzure Sky, performers opened their umbrellas to call for a sunny day. Rhythmic jazz and hip-hop dancing showed the energy of youth, and in the exotic and lively dance of the Dai ethnic group bloomed a beautifulMaiden Flower. The joyousYangkowelcomed the coming Spring Festival. Dozens of former members of the dance company were invited to watch the show, and shot videos to say happy birthday to the now 15-year-old dance company.

“Dance Your Dream” means to carry the hope that dance as an art form can ignite our dreams. With this special show, the Tongji University’s Student Dance Troupe proved their ability and showed their style. By breaking their own limits, they also helped to enrich campus life and promote artistic education. Also, on the night of December 17th, the dance company performed another special show in Jiren Building of the Jiading campus, which was also a complete success.
