On December 5th, Yifan ZHAO, a doctoral student majoring in clinical medicine in Tongji University’ Medical School, successfully donatedhis hematopoietic stem cellsin Shanghai First People’s Hospital. His benevolent donation rekindled a leukemia patient’s courage and hope of life. He is the second student from the Medical School of our university to donate hematopoietic stem cells in past three years. President Gang PEI wrote a letter to highly praise Zhao’s kindness. Vice Chairman of the University Council Prof. Jianping XU also visited ZHAO in the hospital to express his appreciation.

ZHAO is a student of the class of 2007, an eight-year clinical medicine major of Tongji University’s Medical School. He joined the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank and became a hematopoietic stem cell donation volunteer after entering the university in September, 2007. This October, he was informed by the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank that his bone marrow was found to be matched with a leukemia patient’s. He decided to donate his hematopoietic stem cells without hesitation. At that time, ZHAO was busy doing his doctoral study in Wuhan. However, in order to complete the medical examination related to the donation in the local hospital, he immediately came back to Shanghai at his own expense. After he passed the medical examination and signed the informed consent, he completed the successful donation of his hematopoietic stem cells.

“I hope that more and more people will understand the importance of hematopoietic stem cell therapy and become volunteers. Most people have little knowledge about hematopoietic stem cell donations. On one hand, it’s harmless to the donor and on the other hand, it’s lifesaving to the leukemia patient. It’s especially meaningful to me, a medical student,” Zhao said.

"Tongji University is committed to cultivating talents, which promote the sustainable development of the human society as we have a strong sense of social responsibility,” Mr. Gang PEI said in the letter to ZHAO. He also said that students in Tongji should have not only sound academic knowledge, but more importantly the virtue to dedicate themselves to the motherland and society. “What you did reflects positively on our university’s goal to provide a liberal education and to cultivate inter-disciplinary talent, which is the heritage of the Tongji Spirit: to help each other. Tongji University is proud of you!”
