Seven acts of the musical told the extraordinary life story of Mr. NIE Er and twenty songs depicted the historical changes in 1930s and 40s. On the evening of November 18, an original musical Time to Sing a Song for the Nation was staged by Shanghai Opera House in the auditorium of Tongji University, which received enthusiastic responses from teachers and students.

Time to Sing a Song for the Nation showed how Mr. NIE Er, known as People’s Musician met the left-wing playwright Mr. TIAN Han, how they got to know each other and joined hands in composing March of the Volunteers. The colorful singing of the performers changed from bel canto to folk-style singing and falsetto, accompanied by melodic music, vividly described the distinctive personalities of various characters. The audience were fascinated by the artistic expression of the performers and deeply touched by the twisted plots of the musical.
