In the case of fire, the alarm is set on automatically; mayor and his management team initiate a contingency plan; public security, transportation and weather departments are notified; the location of disaster is identified; relief goods are supplied and tracked; dangerous sources nearby are detected; disasters are recorded, and predictions and preventions are made. All this is just an illustration of an Intelligent Table for Mayors of an intelligent city in operation which was independently developed by High Density Intelligent Urbanization Innovation Center of Tongji University directed by Professor WU Zhiqiang.

The Intelligent Table for Mayors made its debut 14th- 16thOct. 2014 on the11th Shanghai International Exhibition of Construction Design and Urban Planning at Shanghai New international Exhibition Center. It successfully attracted the attention of a large number of visitors. Together with the Table were thirty other products digitally designed and made by Tongji University.

The Intelligent Table for Mayors was the highlight of Tongji Designs at the exhibition. Mr. CAO Jing, executive manager of the project, said the project realized instant communication by breaking through digital “islands” based upon large data collected during the digitalization process of urban planning, construction, operation and management. To meet new demands for the intelligent development of Chinese cities in the future, the innovation centre initiated the Intelligent Table for Mayors project in Nov. 2011. It aimed at facilitating majors in their decision making based upon their proper analyses of the ongoing situation by activating the information through the technology of logistics network and cloud calculation.

Weather, traffic, media feedback and emergencies are on the home page of the Intelligent Table for Mayors. Professor WU Zhiqiang designed the following eight functions for the Table: achievements of development, integration of resources, communication, routine administration, recommendation of experiences, emergencies, opinions and suggestions and major projects. They support the mayor in his making wise decisions, which is backed by such achievements of independent intellectual property as Urban Warning Model, Assessment Index System of Wise Cities and Urban Case Bank developed by the High Density Intelligent Urbanization Innovation Center of Tongji University . In addition, mayors may predict the future of the city and understand problems at different stages during the process of urbanization. The Intelligent Table for Mayors has caught the attention of decision makers both at home and abroad.
