How can a 139-gram bridge model bear the weight of 16 kilograms? On September 21st, the 2014 Middle school students structure design invitational tournament hosted by Tongji university finally reached to an end after 3 days fierce competition of 42 bridge model pieces of work from middle school students. School Affiliated to Jinyuan Senior High School and Haimen Middle School Jiangsu Province won team first prize.
On September 19th, the competition was held in college of civil enginerring Tongji University with 126 students (3 persons every team) from 42 high schools from 25 provinces, including High School Affiliated to Fudan University, High School Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and No.1 High School Affiliated to Tongji University. Every team applied fortune paulownia wood and glue to design a bridge structure model of 1.5 meters long in a set time and received tests. Those which are light and stable win the prize.
Reporters observed that every team tried their best in the competition with three students in a team. After several hours’ work, different pieces of work with distinctive features came out mainly including arch bridge, truss bridge etc. Tongji University professors concluded that these students showed keen interest in civil engineering not second to university students.
