
2014 International Design Summer School (IDSS), themed as "The Scenic Way To Countryside Landscape," was hold by College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University from August 1 to August 11. Thirty-eight students from 18 universities in eight countries and regions, including China, Taiwan China, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Japan and Nigeria, joined this summer school. This year's tutors include Professor Terry Clements from Virginia Tech, Professor Jon Burley from Michigan State University, Professor Lori Catalano from University of Colorado Denver, and Professor Han Feng, Professor Zhou Xiangping, Professor Harry Den Hartog, Dr. Wang Jieqiong and Dr. Zhou Hongjun from Tongji University. After the opening greetings from Professor Liu Binyi and Professor Han Feng, director of department of landscape studies, Vice President Wu Zhiqiang and Professor Liu Binyi gave three theme lectures.


Thirty-eight students were working in six groups for nine days. The final presentation was given on August 9, with a critic jury of Professor Jin Taira from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria University, Spain (chair), Dr. Su Yunsheng director of sixth division in Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning & Design Institute, Professor Yang Guiqing, director of urban planning department CAUP and Professor Wang Yuncai, vice director of landscape architecture. Jury recognized six awards including Best Landscape Design Award, Best Holisitc Design Award, Best Conceptual Design Award, Best Planning Design Award, Best Innovative Design Award and Best Technologic Design Award. Dean Li Zhenyu and the jury granted the awards to students and certificates to tutors. After a closing speech of Profess Li, Professor Han Feng announced the closure of summer school.
