Remnants Inspire Fantasies

As products of “Sino-British University Teachers and Students Joint Design Camp”, Cattery for stray cats, woven baskets for pets’ feces recovery, dreamy blurred chandeliers and a variety of small flashlights for children to shake, etc, has been displayed at Design and Innovation Collage of Tongji University, which were designed by 41 teachers and students from twelve Sino-British design universities divided into thirteen groups of green innovative and practical work using wastes as raw material.

In Creative Workshop of Tongji University, PVC plastic, rubber and other industrial leftover material, plexiglass display rack as wastes of trade show, and resident scrap material of community, were simply cut and assembled by the students from both domestic and overseas into creative and practical low-carbon arts.

“Bright Light” designed by Yin Yijing of Tongji University and Stefanie Powell of Central Saint Martin College, University of Arts London, won the Best Promotion Prize. The design of the light utilized the material properties of PET luminous panel to form the effect of foldover, which made the ordinary incandescent light mysterious and blurred.

“Sparkling Flashlight” designed by Dai Yuqing of Jiangnan University and Urte Marija Jurkeviciute of University of Central Lancashire, won the Best Commercial Prize, which helped the environmental-friendly children in community to choose sparkling flashlight components, paint the light holder with innovation and set up particular sparkling shakes, to share with friends in the kindergarten and community.

“Cattery for Stray Cats” designed by Li Hongyu of Central Academy of Fine Arts and Liu Yingxi of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, won the Best Function Prize, solving the problems of lodging and feeding of stray cats and interaction between human beings and cats with a brand new original design concept.

“Jigsaw Puzzle” designed by Emily Holdich of Loughborough University and Long Keyu of Tongji University, won the Best Community Design Prize, by cutting and pasting bottle caps, cosmetics display boxes and PVC plastic to produce this fancy jigsaw puzzle for children.

“Pets’ Feces Recovery Package” designed by Emily Holdich of Loughborough University and Long Keyu of Tongji University, won the Best Environmental-Friendly Prize, using PVC plastic as main material to produce a package to collect feces of cats and dogs, which provided convenience for people to raise pets in community and created clean and tidy environment.

“Young Try” designed by Miao Yuqing of Tongji University and Edward Penn of Loughborough University, won the Best Innovation Prize, as a special toy for children and adults in a way of public space interaction.

“Revival China”—Redesign of Plastic, designed by Dai Rui of Tongji University and Li Xuanbai of Qinghua University, won the Best Teamwork Prize, by recycling and classifying waste plastic bags and processed in hot oil to produce tourist souvenir.
