Promoting Sustainability-Oriented University Concepts: Vice President WU Jiang Visited Indonesian Un

From August 18 to 23, 2013, Prof. WU Jiang, Vice President of Tongji University, visited Bangdung Institute of Technology, Gadjah Mada University, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Yogyakarta and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember of Indonesia and delivered a series of speeches on “Towards a Sustainability-Oriented University: Tongji Practices.” The efforts and achievements made by Tongji University in mainstreaming sustainability in higher education were highly commended by faculty and students of these universities.

During the visits, Prof. WU Jiang met Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati, Vice President of Gadjah Mada University, Prof. Mohammad Nurcholis, Vice President of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Yogyakarta, and Prof. Darminto, Vice President of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. They exchanged ideas on the potential cooperation in the following areas: mutual visits of professors, undergraduates and graduates of leading disciplines in respective universities; co-hosting international conferences; joint interdisciplinary research on frontier fields (including joint cultivation of postgraduates), etc.

In addition, these visits marked the opening of next years’ Alumni Conference of International Training Program on Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education, Asia (ITP ESD-HE, Asia), funded by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and organized by UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD). More than 100 managers and professors from Asian universities as well as officials of Asian countries working on education for sustainable development (ESD) will attend this conference. These visits were accompanied by Dr. FANG Ping, the mentor of ITP ESD-HE, Asia.
