In 2012, the number of international students increased, with the structure optimized and quality improved. In 2012, Tongji registered 1921 international students (463 undergraduate students, 458 postgraduate students, 18 doctoral candidates, 222 general visiting students, 2 advanced visiting students and 315 pre-university students) with a year-on-year increase of 10%. Among them, 509 international students were self-financed, 446 got Chinese government scholarship, 468 were exchange students at the university level and 6 were foreign government scholarship students. Tongji has explored the market of student admission and established an international admission workstation. In 2012, Tongji built 8 sub-stations. It improved a feedback mechanism for information exchange of international students and a daily advisory system for foreign students to apply for admission of Tongji University. Moreover, the international students contact network set up and the fourth “Steering Committee for the Education of International Student” was hosted.
