On Aug 13th, President Pei Gang gave a lecture entitled City and Sustainable University to 50 Chinese and international students in Shanghai summer school and the first summer camp of Excellence alliance.

According to him, the philosophy of sustainable university consists of sustainable education, scientific research, social service and smart campus. Sustainable education involves knowledge, creativity and social responsibility and it is important to achieve transformation from the fundamental to applied research as well as service for the social economy. He envisioned Tongji University’s mission of building itself into a sustainable university.

In discussion, the Chinese and international students from the field of Science, Engineering and Arts raised questions on sustainability concerning energy and environment in Tongji University. They discussed together the commonality of universities and society in sustainable education and the different actions taken by Chinese and European universities on that.
