The United Nations Summit on Climate Change was held in Cancún,Mexico from Nov 29th to Dec 10th. 5 students of Tongji University attended the summit as observers. Li Qingqing and Chen Shuyi are from College of Environmental Science and Engineering. The other three are French exchange students from School of Economics and Management.
The three French students had already attended the Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change as observers last year. They kept following sustainable development and focused on research about carbon compensation funds. Qingqing LI has been taking part in the “Carbon Reduction Groups” in Tongji campus and is working for Carbon Accounting Project of Chongming.Shuyi CHEN is interested in environmental management. She has participated in research on Pudong Harbor City and Hongqiao transport hub.
“It’s such an honour to have the chance of being able to participate the event, and we’ll seize the opportunity”, said Qingqing LI. “We’ll interview some officials and experts, and then observe and think with the perspective of Chinese youth. We will reveal relevant information to our peers. We can use the chance to strengthen interaction with international youth organizations and display the efforts of China to climate change and some results that Tongji achieved in carbon reduction.
Long before the summit, the 5-member team had held weekly discussions. “We conducted research on the latest progress in climate change, and exchanged our views, hoping that we can do a better job as observer,” said Maelle.
To share the latest news and in-depth analysis by experts and authorities, the team had set up a online blog named “COP16” at sina.com.
Last year, 6 students from Tongji University attended the Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change as observers. Their observations and reflections during the summit had earned them a good reputation in Chinese communities.
The Cancún trip was sponsored by Bayer Science and Education Foundation, which has supported “Bayer-Tongji Sustainable Development Chair” since Oct 2007.
