April 29, 2010

On April 28th, the 3rd Steering Committee of Sino-Italian Campus was held in Tongji University. President Pei Gang, Vice President Dong Qi, Vice President Chen Yiyi, as well as President Giulio Ballio from Politecnico di Milano and President Francesco Profumo from Politecnico di Torino attended the meeting. The three sides achieved an agreement on promoting the PoliTong project and transferring the double Bachelor’s degree mode to “4+M” mode, and signed the Agreement.

President Pei Gang introduced the education reform under 12th Five-Year Plan, especially the Elite Engineers Project. He said that the Committee played a pioneer role in transferring the double Bachelor’s degree mode to “4+M” mode and promoting educational joint projects in Sino-Italian Campus. The three universities should cooperate in more fields and strengthen the collaboration in design and innovation, as well as in dealing with global climate change.

The three sides discussed other issues, such as establishing PoliTong professorship, strengthening professors’ communication, cooperating with enterprises, setting scholarships and so on.

After the Committee, President Pei Gang talked to Mr. Giulio Ballio, President of Politecnico di Milano, signed a cooperation agreement on double Master’s Degree of Management, and reached a consensus on developing high-level training courses. He also talked to Mr. Francesco Profumo, President of Politecnico di Torino and achieved initial intent of jointly establishing a South China Center of Clean Energy project at Tongji University. They would like to take this opportunity to strengthen the cooperation on energy and environmental protection research. Meanwhile, automobile design and jewelry design would be the key point in the two universities’ future partnership.

The double Bachelor’s Degree mode started in 2006, with the majors of Information Technology Engineering and Mechanism Production Engineering. At present, there are 213 Chinese students and 65 Italian students. By July this year, about 60 students will be awarded Bachelor’s Degrees both by Tongji University and Politecnico di Milano, or Politecnico di Torino.
