What is the standard of a good graduate student and how to be a good one? How to do scientific research? The University President Pei Gang asked these questions in the talkfest with graduate students from Medical College and College of Life Science on October 14th.
With his own experiences of study and research, Pei Gang talked a lot. For instance, “When doing researches, the student must have keen interest, strong motive and attentive mind.” “Only unremitting efforts and hardheaded practices can bring solid basic skills.” “Research needs team spirit and high EQ.” “To persist in innovation, to have the courage to challenge and to do something different from others.” Pei Gang offered four suggestions, namely, in order to become an excellent graduate student or to succeed in research, we must go to the laboratories and be engaged in the experiments and practices. There is no shortcut in doing research.
On how to do experiment well, Pei Gang gave 10 advices, namely, high aim, be the best, tell a good story, build a solid base, dance with a dragon, stick to the key problem, team and team work, a good learner, summarize and write early, and more attentive. At last, he expressed high expectations to the students present. He hoped the students to work toward the goals of engineering cornerstone, scientific spirit, humanistic quality and pillars of society.
During the interaction period, Pei Gang exchanged ideas with the students present about issues like deficiency of medical documents, cultivation of humanistic quality and developing professional interest. Pei Gang proposed to set up a students’ rostrum in which the students whose papers had been published could share their research experiences with others.
